Organiser's Comments Firstly I would like to thank all the NOC members who volunteered to help on the event. As any event organiser knows getting helpers can be one of the most time consuming and frustrating activities. Not having to ask anybody was fantastic. Secondly my job was made very straightforward by all the pre-event 'legwork' done by Ray Barnes, the Coordinator for the weekend's fun and games. Thirdly thanks are due to the Forestry Commission for their permissions and assistance.
It's always good to try something a little different from the usual type of event and judging from the many favourable comments the day was a success with many competitors taking the time to express their thanks at the second finish. (They certainly didn't take their time anywhere else). Last but not least, thanks to DVO for the loan of a couple of tents - much appreciated.
Tony Donaldson
Planner's Comments For many years I had wanted to plan a badge event in Sherwood Pines but I always seemed to be somewhere else at the time. When I returned from KIMM 98 with soggy brain syndrome and Ray asked me if I would like to plan the short courses, I jumped at the chance. Big Mistake #1.
Sherwood Pines with its strong linear path network and areas of man-eating brambles proved to be far more of a challenge than I had anticipated. "Still there is always the trenches", I thought. Big mistake #2.
The combination of car parking at one end of the forest and the trenches at the other, in February was simply not worth the risk. After all, it would be hard to run the second race with hypothermia, so sadly the trenches just had to go and the 1st generation planning was scrapped.
I planned the three courses to the same technical difficulty with the only variance being the physical difficulty. Contrary to what your legs told you in the bath afterwards, the worst of the brambles were widely avoided even if this meant that the technical difficulty was diminished. But I didn't think I would be thanked for ruining the following days run. If I was being particularly cruel, or looking for a suitable turning control, Peter would gently steer me back onto the straight and narrow pointing out control features etc that would be more suitable. Indeed I believe that Peter's suggestions greatly heightened the element of head to head racing that I was striving for.
There was always the difficulty of predicting the winning times and although the distances were based on previous events in Sherwood Pines we could never be sure who was going to run on the day. Overall we managed to get it within 10% with only a couple of exceptions.
I do hope you all enjoyed it. (I take it you all agree, as I heard no rude comments at the finish.)
I would particularly like to thank Peter whose ideas and guidance were invaluable to ensuring the events success.
I would also like to thank the following for their assistance: Mark Thomson for helping me with the control hanging/collecting (even though it meant we missed seeing all the action); Alan Beardsley and David Olivant for the backstage work; and particularly my wife Vivian for her patience and assistance in dealing with overprinters, controls, bag sealers, and maps strewn all over the house for what seems like for ever.
Right I'm ready for a rest, so I'm off to run around some sand dunes in the dark! If you see me looking lost just remember yesterday and point me in the right direction.
Keith Streb
Controller's Comments Thanks for coming and acting as guinea pigs in our new venture. I trust our inexperience in putting on short races wasnt too obvious. It seems from many comments, overheard and seen, that we were successful in papering over any cracks. Credit goes particularly to Keith Streb for his imaginative planning and Tony Donaldson for his efficient organisation but especially to Michael Napier for his incredible computer technology.
Finally two apologies. Firstly the confusion caused by the differing codes and secondly the brambles. We accept responsibility and apologise for the former, but not the latter.
